Project Description
Elevating Pittsburgh International Airport as a hub for innovation, economic growth, and regional transformation.
As a key component of the region’s economic gateway, Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT) plays a pivotal role as a catalyst for business attraction and retention. PIT acts as a significant front door for economic development and diversification across the region. MXD and CEC developed a vision and land development strategy that will enable the airport to act as an “Anchor Catalyst” generating regional economic benefits and generate “Non-Aeronautical Revenues and Returns” for PIT. The approach also identified existing regional economic niches and Up-and-Downstream Economic Sectors that led to the “Optimal PIT Development Program and Strategy Plan”. Our approach also identifies a range of critical technical, conceptual, implementation and promotional strategies, which in turn define “Development Typologies” for target sectors and articulate an “Economic-Driven Spatial Development Framework” that responds to the demands of end users.
Degree of Success: The Pittsburgh International Airport Innovation Campus (Market & Economic) Development Strategy has catalyzed innovative development on the land adjacent to the airport. The University of Pittsburgh will be partnering with Pittsburgh International Airport to develop an innovation campus on 195 acres of land west of the midfield terminal. The development will be called “Neighborhood 91” and will establish Pittsburgh as a leader in additive manufacturing. Arencibia, a company that recycles argon, helium and neon that’s used in the additive manufacturing processes, was announced as an anchor tenant for the development. The Pittsburgh International Airport has also partnered with Carnegie Mellon University to turn the airport into a testbed for innovation in aviation and customer service technology.
