Positioning the Ekurhuleni Aerotropolis as Africa’s premier gateway through strategic planning and economic transformation.
MXD, in collaboration with an Aurecon-led international consortium which also included CallisonRTKL/Arcadis, was engaged to create the Ekurhuleni Aerotropolis Economic Development Master Plan for Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality: a city of 3.5 million contiguous to Johannesburg and Pretoria.
The Master Plan identifies directions to leverage OR Tambo International Airport – Africa’s busiest airport – as an economic engine for the city, province, and country. Primary objectives of the Master Plan are the creation of more and better jobs, diversification of the economy, and competitively positioning the Ekurhuleni Aerotropolis as the “Gateway to Africa.”
The Master Plan provides identification of Catalyst Projects, Commercial Land Development, Infrastructure Improvements, and a comprehensive Land Use Plan for increased transportation efficiency within the “Last-Mile” of the Aerotropolis core.
